Coaching Innovation

More than a decade ago, I had an opportunity that would change my professional and personal trajectory: I got my first executive coach, and it has been a difference-maker. Many leaders have the benefit of executive coaches who create spaces for them to process, envision, engage with themselves, and work through leadership challenges they face. Great leaders are not born—they are coached. Coaching is not just about guidance; it's about transformation. Shaped through mentorship, reflection, and a willingness to embrace growth.

As we reflect on Black history and leadership, we see that the most innovative Black leaders—whether in business, activism, or the arts—understood the power of coaching and mentorship in shaping the future. Benjamin E. Mays, the educator, and theologian, influenced Dr Martin Luther King Jr. as a student at Morehouse and even as he emerged into a transformative leader, reinforcing the idea that leadership is cultivated through intentional learning and guidance.

The connection between coaching and innovation is clear: When leaders are guided, challenged, and supported, they think differently, act boldly, and create new possibilities.

My recently published coaching journal, Adventures in Leadership: A 30 Day Quest to Elevate Your Leadership & Life, is designed to make coaching accessible and to support leaders in strengthening their leadership muscles, embracing reflection, and cultivating an innovation mindset.  Learn more about the journal by viewing the Adventures in Leadership Fireside Chat with Kym Grinnage (above and on YouTube)

Coaching + Innovation: What Every Leader Should Consider

  • Leadership Growth Requires Reflection – Coaching creates the space for leaders to pause, assess, and refine their vision. How often do you step back to evaluate your leadership approach?

  • Coaching Can Energize Innovative Thinking – Even the best leaders need someone to challenge their thinking and push them beyond their comfort zones. Who is coaching or mentoring you on your leadership journey?

  • Impactful Leaders Coach Other Leaders – Just as past leaders shaped today's trailblazers, you have the power to coach, uplift, and mentor others. Who are you investing in to carry forward the next wave of leadership and innovation?

Coaching & Innovation Reflection:

  • How has coaching or mentorship shaped the way I lead and innovate?

  •  What steps am I taking to cultivate an innovation mindset within my team or organization?

  • In what ways can I be more intentional about mentoring and developing the next generation of leaders?

Actions to Strengthen Your Leadership & Innovation Mindset:

  1. Start the Adventures in Leadership 30-Day Coaching Journal – Document your daily leadership insights, challenges, and moments of growth. Reflect on how coaching impacts your decision-making.

  2. Study the Coaches and Mentors Behind Great Leaders – Learn about the people who shaped leaders like Benjamin E. Mays, who helped influence and inspire Dr King. What lessons can you apply to your coaching approach?

  3. Get a Coach or Become a Mentor – I've come to understand that leadership is an evolving cycle and that it's a commitment; whether you seek guidance or offer it, there must be a commitment to strengthening leadership through intentional coaching.

History and experience show us that coaching and innovation can go hand in hand—when leaders invest in their own growth, embrace mentorship, and challenge their thinking, they unlock new possibilities for themselves and those they lead. Take the next step in your leadership journey by reflecting, seeking guidance, and committing to investing in the current and the next generation of leaders.
